Second Team Finals 2019

On Monday the 2nd September the County 2nd team went to Walsall Golf Club in Staffordshire to play Staffordshire in the Midlands North Final. The weather was set fair and the course was well established parkland. We were of course anticipating a tough contest, and we were not wrong!

The morning foursomes went well and we managed to get 2 out of the 3 points on offer – these were gained by Emma Anderson playing with Carol Houghton and Louise Wilding who played with Ava Waplington. Of course we were delighted to find ourselves in this position after the morning, but knew that Staffordshire would be all out for a win in the afternoon. The afternoon matches got off to a very good start with Carol Houghton delivering the first point shortly followed by Audrey MacMillan who also had a good win. Emma Anderson had a tough match and fought hard to the bitter end despite having to have a first aid break as she had played a shot whilst being knee deep in nettles! Her match went to all square going down the 18th and she achieved a creditable half. This left us 4 and a half points each with one match to finish.

Our rookie Ava Waplington was the last player out and going down the 18th all square. Her opponent put her drive behind a tree - Ava’s drive was in position A. Staying calm and consulting her course planner Ava played the perfect lay up to water for her second shot. This was followed by an accurate shot 1 foot from the pin. Ava’s opponent was 4 onto the green and nowhere near the pin, so she conceded giving us the final point. The overall score was 5 and a half to 3 and a half and so NCLGA Seconds have won the Midlands North Region Cup for 2019.

Once again the team were fantastic on the day. Representing Notts were Emma Anderson, Jan Hikin, Carol Houghton, Audrey MacMillan, Jacey Peacock, Ava Waplington and Louise Wilding. On a personal note, I must say how very much I have enjoyed working with the second team this year and thank them all for the great effort that they have put into playing for the team. Other players who have represented the 2nds this year and helped to get us to the final are Kristina Larazevic, Lesley Morris and Lizzie Woods.
