Norwood Park in Golf News

Norwood CharterNorwood Park Golf Club has become the first club in Nottinghamshire to sign up to the R&A’s Women in Golf Charter and has pledged to drive participation among women and girls, as well as encouraging more females to pursue a career within the golf industry. Over the past 10 years, female membership has increased by 106%, while girl membership has seen a 550% increase.

They already have an extensive history of supporting both county and national initiatives, including supporting England Golf ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ programme, which targets beginner girls aged 7-14 years to learn golf in a fun and friendly way. Norwood was a pilot centre for the national project in 2016, and has since developed weekly coaching groups, outreach work in schools and fun events at the club. Many of Norwood Junior Girls are now County players (Junior Member Maddie Smith was recently selected for the England Golf Regional Training Squad), while the club’s PGA Professional, Richard Strange, is the lead County Girls Coach, with Norwood the training base for the County Girls Squad

Lady President's Day Cancelled

Following the latest government restrictions which place Nottinghamshire in the HIGH tier of COVID-19 restrictions, our Lady President, Eva Glasby, with the full support of the executive committee, has made the decision to cancel Lady President’s Day, due to take place at Newark GC on Monday the 19th October 2020.

Sad News – Jane Brewer

It is with sadness that I report the passing away of Jane Brewer on September the 13th. Jane’s maiden name was Redgate before she married Brian Brewer. She was a member of both Wollaton and Notts Ladies Golf Club. Jane was an excellent golfer and her titles speak for themselves; she won the British Girls Championship in 1951, the Midland Championship in 1951 and 1952. Her first County Championship win was 1953 and last was 1978 - not bad going; she won 11 Championships in all.

Jane served as County Captain twice from 1972-73 and the 2nd time she stepped up as Bridgett Patrick’s Vice when Bridgett’s first choice was unable to continue, that was from 1986-87. Jane served as Notts President from 1994 until 1998. She was also Chairman of the English Ladies Golf Association in 1977/8 and Chairman of the Ladies Golf Union in 1982. Jane committed many years to the playing and organising of golf and she will be missed by many of her friends in the golfing community.

Update on Competitions - May 27th

Hello Ladies

I hope that this update finds you all well and that you have been managing to get some social golf in during this period of beautiful weather that we are experiencing. On Monday the 25th May we held an NCLGA executive meeting by Zoom. Unsurprisingly but regrettably; we have cancelled both the Summer Meeting due to take place at Rufford Park on the 6th of July and also County Captain’s Day due to be held on the 20th July at the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club. Refunds will be made by our treasurer Jenny Smith as previously. I wish that I had some better news for you all, but at the moment all I can do is hope that you are enjoying your social golf which will give you the chance to get and not only play but enjoy the fresh air and seeing the friends that you have been missing at your own clubs.

With best wishes and stay safe.

Autumn Meeting 2020

This Monday the 7th September we were at last able to hold a county competition and I would like to thank all the ladies who made the trip to College Pines to take part. The weather wasn’t marvellous and we did have an unfortunate spell of rain, but it did feel good to play at a different course. I would like to congratulate the winners of the day – please see the full results list which is published on the website.

My thanks go to College Pines for allowing us to hold the event on their course and to those members of the executive who have worked hard to ensure that the event ran smoothly. I hope that all ladies in the county are continuing to enjoy their golf, especially as winter will be upon us soon enough.

Keep well everyone.

County Matches 2020

After discussions involving our President Eva Glasby, MNR Rep Clare Jones, Vice-Captain Di Payne and Assistant Vice-Captain Audrey MacMillan and with the support of our Executive Committee, and I must stress, it is with sincere regret, we have decided that we must withdraw from Midlands North County Week and our reasons are outlined below:

  • Following the outbreak of Covd19 in China a period of 12 weeks has passed and they are still not in the clear, we are at the outset of the outbreak here and will in all probability have a similar if not longer elapsed time. This will take us up to mid-June and we may still have all the government measures in place.
  • Most importantly, as County Week will necessitate the congregation of people we feel it may still not be safe to put our players and officials in a situation where their health maybe compromised.

It is with regret that we have come to this conclusion but it is our responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all those who would be involved. Since making this decision we have been informed that Derbyshire have also withdrawn from the competition. We look forward to seeing and competing with all our fellow county members in much happier times.
On a brighter note - we are hoping that it may be possible to reorganise some of our County golf towards the end of the Summer so that we can all get out into the sunshine and celebrate by playing the game that we all love with our friends and fellow club members, but for the time being we need to make sure everyone stays safe.

Kind regards
Helen Haycox
