Sad News – Jane Brewer

It is with sadness that I report the passing away of Jane Brewer on September the 13th. Jane’s maiden name was Redgate before she married Brian Brewer. She was a member of both Wollaton and Notts Ladies Golf Club. Jane was an excellent golfer and her titles speak for themselves; she won the British Girls Championship in 1951, the Midland Championship in 1951 and 1952. Her first County Championship win was 1953 and last was 1978 - not bad going; she won 11 Championships in all.

Jane served as County Captain twice from 1972-73 and the 2nd time she stepped up as Bridgett Patrick’s Vice when Bridgett’s first choice was unable to continue, that was from 1986-87. Jane served as Notts President from 1994 until 1998. She was also Chairman of the English Ladies Golf Association in 1977/8 and Chairman of the Ladies Golf Union in 1982. Jane committed many years to the playing and organising of golf and she will be missed by many of her friends in the golfing community.

Jane’s funeral will take place on Thursday 24th September at Loughborough Cemetery at 11.45am and there will be a loudspeaker outside the building so that anyone can hear the service. The family has requested donations, in place of flowers, for the Alzheimer's Society. Cheques should be sent to the funeral directors, Gamble & Sons, Quorn, Loughborough, but the cheque should be made out to the Alzheimer's Society.

I did not know Jane Brewer myself, but everyone speaks very highly of her and I can only marvel at her excellent record as a golfer and her level of commitment to women’s golf.
