Annual General Meeting 2023

Kathryn HorberryThe Annual General Meeting of NCLGA was held at Beeston Fields Golf Club on Monday 13th November commencing at 10.30am. 58 Members attended the meeting. I wish to thank Beeston Fields for allowing us the room and, as always, making us feel most welcome.

Our congratulations to Kathryn Horberry who was awarded honorary life membership of the NGLGA in recognition of her service and dedication to the county, including being County Champion no fewer than 8 times and, in 2015, captaining the Nottinghamshire team to victory in the England County Finals. Well deserved Kathryn!

Thank you to retiring County Captain, Caron Harrison for a great year and best wishes to Julie Revill who becomes our 2024 County Captain: Clare Jones, Vice-Captain and Di Payne, Assistant Vice-Captain. I welcome officially to the Committee Helen Haycox as Competition Secretary and Anne Woolley as Senior Organiser. We still have a vacancy for an Assistant Junior Organiser if anyone feels they could help, please contact Suzi Anderson.

Here's hoping for a great golfing year in 2024!

Gillian Stump, President

Summer Round Up

A round up of some of the achievements by Notts players and Clubs over the summer.

Recently Notts Ladies represented by Lauren Spray, Laura Morris and Carol Wild claimed very creditable 4th place in the inaugural England Women’s Champion Club Competition. The standard was extremely high with the course record being broken 3 times by the winning Club Walton Heath. Qualification for this competition is the Club with the best 3 gross scores from the morning round of the Championships and Spring Meetings held in May.

Jorja Newbold from Oakmere Admirals was the 36 hole Gross champion in the MNR Girls Championship at Erewash with a two over par total over the 2 rounds. Amelia Hogg claimed 4th prize in the net competition.

Further junior success from Jorja and Elizabeth Wilson from Norwood Park when after success in the Notts Schools and English Schools Championships they were selected to represent English Schools. Elizabeth was given the honour of captaining the side to a crushing win over Wales. Elizabeth was also selected for England U16 against Switzerland at Pannal Golf Club.

Ladies Interclub Final 2023

Ladies Interclub WinnersHollinwell was the impressive venue for the 2023 Ladies Interclub final, on 11th September, between College Pines and Wollaton Park. After the recent spell of warm weather it came as a shock to start the match in the rain, and it continued intermittently throughout. Some of the showers were very heavy and added to the difficulty of the already challenging course by making the rough extremely difficult to escape from!

Interclub runners upThe College Pines team of Jayne Mokes, Lesley Chrispin, Adele Haddon and Chris Harper appeared to have the upper hand for much of the round. The momentum turned over the challenging final stretch producing a real “nail biter”.

Second Team Match Report 2023

19th July v Leicestershire at Stanton – Notts lost 5-4
28th July v Leicestershire at Scraptoft - Notts lost 5½ - 3½
14th August v Lincolnshire at Rufford – Notts lost 7-2
31st August v Lincolnshire at Stoke Rochford – An excellent half

The games were played in fantastic spirit with the results not quite going our way for the first three but so many matches could have been a different story. Some excellent golf was played and in some difficult weather conditions. At Rufford the wind was so strong, if I had been Mary Poppins I would have flown high in the sky!
Breaking news…We did manage a momentous draw in our final match away to Lincolnshire.
This year we had 3 players making their first appearance with 17 players taking part over the four matches. The squad were: Amelia Hogg, Bernie Barton, Bev Cook, Carol Houghton, Charlie Inger, Cheryl Gee, Ellen Sanderson, Emma Anderson, Hailey Laverty, Jan Calder, Lisa Anthoney, Lorraine Howd, Lynne Inman, Maddison Clarke, Millie Marsh, Sue Linacre and Wendy Kerry. Thank you all, you were a pleasure to watch.
We were truly blessed to have so many good team players to choose from and introduced new players to the squad. Hopefully we will go from strength to strength over the coming years.

Vice County Captain 2023

Autumn Meeting & Veterans Cups

What weird weather we’ve had this year! The Autumn Meeting held at The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country club on the 4th September was played in glorious weather with temperatures in the late 20’s (so much different to what we have experienced during the “summer” months). The course was in superb condition and that was reflected in some good scoring. Thank you to Elaine Fish the Lady Captain at the Nottinghamshire for officiating as starter and to our volunteers on the desk.

The turnout from our newly amalgamated seniors section was impressive and the Veterans Cups were all awarded for excellent scores.

Maureen Clarke wins Unsung Hero Award

Maureen ClarkeSherwood Forest Golf Club’s Maureen Clarke has been awarded the Unsung Hero award sponsored by England Golf at the Women in Golf Awards. Maureen was presented with the prize at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey on Tuesday, ahead of the start of the AIG Women’s Open, which kicks off on Thursday.

Maureen has made an outstanding contribution to women’s and girls’ golf for over 40 years. She joined a beginner’s golf course in 1968 and in 2023 her enthusiasm for golf is undiminished. To be dedicated to one volunteer role for over 40 years is praiseworthy and deserving of recognition but in Maureen's case, she has given exceptional service at national, county and club level. Underpinning this is her commitment to the future of golf, whether this is through developing junior golfers, training and encouraging future rules officials or offering prompt support to club handicap officials.

County Captain's Day 2023

Thank you to all the ladies who supported my Captains Day at Sherwood Forest Golf Club on Monday 17th July. We had a capacity field of 32 teams. Sherwood was in excellent condition and, as usual, provided a stern test of golf. The weather was kind overall but was spoiled by a couple of cloudbursts, but luckily no thunder and lightening!

The winners with an excellent 85 points were Clare Jones, Rosemary Lockwood, Bernie Newlove and Ann Hunter from Wollaton Park. Second with 81 points were Sue West, Carol Wild, Kirsten Hardiker and Marion Turnbull from Notts Ladies. Another team from Notts Ladies, Glenys Priestley, Di Payne, Rita Monks & Pauline Tillcock claimed third place on countback from Kath Sharman, Eva Glasby, Julia Hatcher and Jane Tucker from Newark (78 points). Download full results here. Nearest the pin on the 4th Hole was Janet Batty from Serlby Park and on the 10th, Sue West from Notts. Well done both!
