Notts Win MVLGA Team Championships

NottinghamshireThe MVLGA County Team Championships were played at Handsworth Golf Club over 3 days from 11th to 13th October 2021. The main tournament is 2 days of stroke play, off scratch, with 3 players scores from 4 counting each day. With 16 teams taking part from around the Midlands the competition was tough. Staffordshire have won the tournament for the last 5 years and, with handicaps of 1 and less, Nottinghamshire needed to perform well.

With good scores from Caron Harrison and Carol Houghton on the 1st day, Notts were leading by 1 shot going into the last day, with Staffordshire and Worcestershire just behind.
Notts played steady golf on Day 2 and pulled off a fantastic win to take the title by 6 shots from Staffordshire.

Congratulations on a great performance to the team representing Notts:  Caron Harrison, Carol Houghton and Sue Penfold from Sherwood Forest and Carol Wild from Notts Ladies.

Ladies Interclub Final 2021

Ladies Interclub 21aThe Ladies Interclub Final was played on 13th September, at Sherwood Forest Golf Club, between Mapperley and Coxmoor Golf Clubs. The weather was good, the course at Sherwood was in fine order and the spectators were treated to some nail-bitingly good golf. We saw some very good putts being holed.
Congratulations must go to both Coxmoor and Mapperley for reaching the final, but after a gritty performance by all the finalists and despite the best efforts of Coxmoor, Mapperley were victorious with a score of 5up.

Sad News - Marion Harris

It is with sadness that we report the passing away of Marion Elsie Harris on 30th August 2021, at the age of 90. Marion was a long-time member of Radcliffe on Trent Golf Club and a past NCLGA County Captain (2007- 2008). She was married to Gerry and had two sons. She was a proficient pianist an a lady determined to succeed at everything she approached, playing bridge in latter years after her golf failed to still attain her high standards.

President Eva Glasby and County Captain Helen Haycox, along with family, friends and golf aquaintences, attended her thanksgiving service at Lambley Crematorium on 17th Sep[tember. It was a lovely service with poems, music and eulogy.

Second Team Results 2021

The following are the match results for the second team this season:

18th July v Leicestershire at Lingdale - Notts lost 6½ - 2½
21st July v Leicestershire at Beeston - Nott lost 7 - 2

3rd August v Lincolnshire at Norwood - Notts lost 5½ - 3½
18th August v Lincolnshire at Ashby Decoy - Notts lost 5½ - 3½

The results don’t quite tell an accurate story. Although we lost all of the matches, the games were mostly extremely close, well-fought affairs, often finishing on the 17th or 18th. Throughout, our players battled hard and played some excellent golf, always with a fantastic sporting spirit. This year we had 10 debutants, and a total of 17 players took part over the four matches. The squad were: Bernie Barton, Charlie Inger, Claire Wilson, Julie Revill, Lesley Morris, Millie Marsh, Suzi Anderson, Audrey Macmillan, Ava Wapplington, Bev Cook, Cheryl Gee, Hailey Laverty, Lizzie Wood, Lorraine Howd, Lynne Inman, Jan Calder and Rosemary Lockwood. While this had its drawbacks, perhaps lessening our consistency, it had the huge benefit of introducing new, keen players to the squad, thus deepening our pool for future seasons. Hopefully we will have gained lots of valuable experience!

County Captain's Day 2021

Hello Ladies! Well, what a day, County Captain’s Day was very definitely not what we are all used to - these are strange times. Many of you will be aware of the difficulties that had occurred at The Nottinghamshire in the late afternoon prior to Captain’s Day, and firstly I must sincerely thank the club for pulling out all the stops to ensure that the day still went ahead. The team there worked extremely hard to provide a meal and pulled in staff from anywhere that they could. The lovely lady in the cream blouse who worked all day is the owner’s daughter who is a head teacher in Leicestershire!

July 15th was a lovely, warm, and sunny day. The conditions for golf were fabulous and the scores reflected this. I received many complimentary comments about the excellent condition of the course. And now to the results….
The winning team are Jan Hooley, Pam Musson, Elaine Shelton and Sue Evans of Stanton on The Wolds with a fantastic score of 91. In second place, another great score of 86 are Wendy Kerry, Lorraine Howd, Sheila Drummond and Gini Whitehead of Ruddington Grange. In third place are Wendy Adcock and Jane Quibell from Norwood Park, Sandy Flewitt (Horsley Lodge) and Nancy Tatham (Lincoln) with a score of 85. Wendy’s team took third place on countback with a back nine score of 45.
