Australian Spoons MNR Final

IMG 3670How wonderful it was to welcome 36 foursomes pairs from across the region to the regional final of the Australian Spoons on 12th July at Ruddington Grange Golf Club,Nottinghamshire. The winners were Josie Connolly and Penny Richardson, Ruddington Grange GC, with 39 points. Josie and Penny will be representing the region at the National Final at Woodhall Spa GC during England Golf week in August - play well ladies and do the region proud! They were presented with their trophies and prize vouchers at a club event a few days after the regional final.

Second with 37 points were Nicky Whitton and Ann Meadows, Aston Wood GC on countback from Elaine Chappell and Alison Boyes, Lutterworth GC, 37 points. Fourth with 32 points were Helen Linnington and Jill Woodford, Erewash Valley GC on countback from Gretta Blackburn and Bridget Biggs, Chevin GC.

My thanks to Simon Bloor and the staff at Ruddington Grange for their support before and during the competition. Special thanks to Gini Whitehead, Lady Captain at Ruddington, for her support and to her ladies section who provided the starters and a welcome break for cakes and drinks at the Halfway House. Finally thank you to all who have supported the competition at their clubs and at the regional final especially during these unprecedented times.

Summer Meeting & Vets 2021

The Summer Meeting took place at Rufford Golf and Country Club on Monday the 5th of July. The weather gods smiled on us and for the most part the competitors had a dry round. Rufford is an attractive parkland course with challenging greens which are quite large and strategically placed bunkers, the course draws you in like a wolf in sheep’s clothing – looks lovely but is difficult or maybe it’s just me! Of note is the signature par 3 17th hole over the water, a daunting tee shot for most of us.

However, this did not stop some extremely good scores being posted. Congratulations go to the winners: The Summer meeting Scratch - Jubilee Bowl was won by Caron Harrison of Sherwood Forest with a score of 76 gross and the Summer meeting Nett - Jubilee Bowl by Lesley Morris of The Nottinghamshire with a score 68. The Vet’s meeting Scratch - Gill Shawcross Trophy also went to Caron Harrison, 76 gross and the Vet’s meeting Nett - Challenge Cup to Lesley Morris, nett 68. The Dorothy Payne Trophy for 70+ was won by Carol Bowles of Ruddington Grange with 32 points.

Once again there was much hard work behind the scenes and thanks must go to Rosemary Lockwood and Sue Robinson for manning the desk all day and administering the competition. Many thanks also go to Rufford for presenting the course in such good order and hosting us for the day. Full results are available for downoad here.

MNR County Week 2021

County Week 2021County week took place this year at Hinckley Golf Club and there was much anticipation as to how this event would be managed with the many Covid rules still in place. However, the Leicestershire and Rutland Ladies Golf Association had this all-in hand, and the event was well organised - our thanks go to them and Hinckley Golf Club for hosting us. Hinckley is a beautiful parkland course and was in terrific condition. It has some very quirky holes, and the greens are superb but challenging.

On day one we had a close match in the morning against Leicestershire and thought we were going to scrape 2½ points but just lost out. The afternoon presented us with a tough challenge - Staffordshire, but the team played well, and we took this match 3 points to 2. Day two Shropshire and then Derbyshire. In the morning more success, with a convincing win of 4½ to 1½. In the afternoon we faced Derbyshire and the team came through again 3 and 2.

Coronation Cups 2021

The Coronation Cups competition was played at Southwell GC on Thursday 3rd June 2021. We were a small field, but made the most of a beautiful summery day (finally!) at Southwell. This really is a course of two halves, with a stark contrast between the nines, which most of us found challenging. Our winners with an excellent score of 41 points were Margaret Thorpe and Karen Donnelly from Ruddington Grange. Second place went to Jane Tucker and Julia Hatcher from Newark with 39 points, and third with 38 points were Jan Hooley and Pam Musson from Stanton. Just missing out on countback were Riemie Coulson and Marion Wraith from Southwell. Riemie is the Lady Captain of Southwell, and had done a magnificent job as Starter before playing herself, which makes their round all the more impressive!
I would like to thank Southwell for hosting us and making us so welcome. Thanks also to our stalwarts on the registration desk, Sue Robinson and Di Whittaker.

County Championship & Spring Meeting 2021

Libby and MaddieThis event was held at Hollinwell from Friday the 14th May through to Sunday the 16th of May, the weather forecast was dreadful but was exceedingly kind to us apart from late on Saturday afternoon when it absolutely chucked it down! It was great to see so many competitors at Hollinwell and the scores were good overall. Thank you to all those who entered and continue to support County golf, I hope that you enjoyed your game and managed to catch up with old friends and maybe even make some new friends whilst enjoying competitive golf.

The results are reported in full below, but of note on the Friday was the morning best gross and nett round played by Maddy Smith who managed a score of 8 under par for a total of 67 – this is a course record. Cheryl Gee just missed out on the best nett with a score of 68 - a fabulous score. Congratulations go to all those who qualified for the knockout matches which were played over the weekend and to our new County Champion Libby Kilbride. The spectators were all treated to an extremely high standard of golf and the matches were all both nail biting and exciting.

County Waltz 2021

Thursday April 22nd was a fabulous day in so many ways. The sun shone and the spring flowers were out, but most importantly we were back enjoying a county competition! Twenty six teams waltzed around Oakmere Park, which was looking beautiful, and showing the benefits of its recent improvements.

While scoring generally proved tricky - blame the rust of lockdown! - a few teams stormed round and it was very close at the top. Southwell’s team of Sue Brownson, Wendy Stretch and Charlie Hall took the honours with 71 points, one ahead of second place Margaret Thorpe, Karen Donnelly and Yvonne Jones (Ruddington Grange) and third on countback Alison Johnson, Susan Nichols and Wendy Miller (Rushcliffe). Frances McGinty, Anne Thow and Pat Cawkwell (College Pines) came fourth. Well done to those teams, who will receive prize vouchers in the post.

I must thank Oakmere Park for hosting us so wonderfully, managing despite the restrictions to provide a lovely relaxed atmosphere and really exceptional food at the picnic tables. I know a few of us will be back for their fish and chips again! Thank you also to Sue Robinson, Di Whittaker and Rosemary Lockwood for their hard work on the day and in advance to ensure a smoothly run event. Full results available here.

Senior Vice Captain.

Match v Sheffield Union 2021

On Monday the 19th April we managed to play a county match for the first time since September 2019; needless to say there was much excitement and some nerves (on my part). The weather was beautiful for our afternoon tee off at The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club. The Signature Course at The Nottinghamshire has undergone many improvements of late and was in very good condition, the pin positions proved to be challenging.

Our team was made up of experienced ‘old hands’ and some of our up and coming junior talent. It really was good to see the pairs all waiting to tee off and get their matches underway. From various vantage points on the course the spectators were able to witness some sparkling golf, it really was an enjoyable afternoon which was rounded off by a fabulous result – we won all 5 matches. The scratch match played was pairs better ball and the team representing NCLGA was as follows: Carol Houghton and Jorja Newbold, Caron Harrison and Ava Waplington, Vicky Johnson and Leonie Muir, Libby Kilbride and Bernie Barton and last but certainly not least Emma Anderson and Lucy Moorhouse. Well done to the team!
