Summer Meeting & Vets 2023

The Summer Meeting was held at Worksop, on Monday 3rd July, in very unsummerlike conditions.  The weather was cold and all competitors suffered a thorough soaking.  Despite this there were some impressive scores. The overall scratch and winner of the Jubilee bowl and also the Gill Shawcross Seniors Trophy was Carol Houghton from The Nottinghamshire with 81 gross. Carol now qualifies for the England Golf Senior Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in September and we wish her luck in that event.

The Handicap Cup winner was Margaret Thorpe from Ruddington Grange with an impressive 39 points. Margaret was also winner of the Challenge Cup (over 50’s net) and Dorothy Payne Cup (over 70’s net) Congratulations Margaret!
Other winners were:
Div 1
1st Jayne Barrs 35 points c/b
2nd Loraine Howd 35 points
3rd Karen Ward 31 points c/b

Div 2
1st Virginia Whitehead 35 points
2nd Janet Batty 34 points
3rd Margaret Ferguson 33points

County Championship & Spring Meeting 2023

Finalists on the tee 1On Friday 12th May at Coxmoor Golf club we held the 36 hole stroke play stage of the County Championships and also the 18 hole Spring Meeting. Playing in cold conditions we would be more accustomed to in January or February, scoring was extremely difficult.

In the 36 holes, Maddie Smith (Norwood) won the scratch prize with 150 and Amelia Hogg (Sherwood Forest) won the net with 148 - both for the second year running. Norwood Park were the winners of the Spencer Watson Shield for the third year in a row with the team of Maddie Smith, Elizabeth Wilson and Charlie Inger (Score 481). The Spring Meeting scratch prize was won by Caron Harrison (Sherwood Forest) with 79 and the net by Jane Morton (Coxmoor) with 74.

Notts Ladies were the team with the three lowest individual gross scores from both the Championship morning round and the Spring Meeting and will go on to represent Nottinghamshire in the English Women’s Champion Club in September.

County Waltz 2023

It was a cool and windy day on Wednesday April 19th at Norwood Park for the County Waltz.  The sun tried to make an appearance but the wind made conditions quite tricky. The greens were very good and the course was in great condition for the time of year. Norwood Park made us very welcome and helped enormously in the smooth running of the competition. Many thanks go to ladies who helped with the raffle and the starters who stood in the cool wind.  We really appreciate your help.  To the club, thank you very much for hosting our event.

We had 29 teams representing 15 Nottinghamshire clubs in our first competition of the season.  A big thank you for your support in providing raffle prizes and buying raffle tickets ladies. Stanton on the Wolds had a very good day, winning 3 out of 4 prizes.

Well done to all our winners.

Match v Sheffield Union 2023

We received a warm welcome from Serlby Park, the hosts of our annual match against Sheffield Union, played on Thursday 13th April. There were numerous spectating members on hand and ready to direct the competitors round the tricky layout and also catch to a glimpse of our talented County golfers. The hospitality we received was superb. Thank you Serlby Park.

The weather was kind to us overall, staying dry, but a tricky wind made play difficult on the tight course. We had a very enjoyable, close match, but unfortunately the result of 3-2 wasn’t in our favour. As is traditional for this fixture the team was a mix of youth and experience. Thank you all for playing:

Cheryl Gee & Loraine Howd
Maddie Smith & Lizzy Wood
Lesley Morris & Lisa Anthoney
Bernie Barton & Charlie Inger
Emma Anderson & Amelia Hogg

Thank you to also to Vice Captain Julie, Assistant Vice Captain Clare and President Gillian for their support.

Caron Harrison
Captain

MVLGA Team Championships 2022

Notts Vets Team 2The Midlands Vets held their annual County Team Championships at the wonderful Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridgeshire, from 3rd to 5th October 2022. Sixteen teams took part from all over the Midlands, with Nottinghamshire entering 2 teams of 4 players. The Wandlebury course looked spectacular in the Autumn sun, with an array of colours. The tournament comprises a greensome followed by 2 rounds of medal play with 3 scores from 4 to count towards the team result.

Congratulations to Audrey Macmillan and Bernie Barton who won the greensome competition. Bernie also went onto to win the 36-hole Nett Prize with a combined score of only 2 over her handicap. Along with Andrea Stockdale and Sue Penfold they were the winning team in the Nett Team event. The 1st team of Caron Harrison, Carol Houghton, Carol Wild, and Sue West were runners-up in the Scratch team event and Carol Wild won the Over-65 36-hole Gross prize.

Good third place finish from Nottinghamshire!

Notts Team 2022 Finals 2The English Women’s County Finals took place at Stoneham Golf Club, Hampshire, from 16th to 18th September 2022.

I know many of you will have followed the daily results from the Finals, and are aware that our team finished in a very creditable third place, behind winners Essex and runners up Buckinghamshire. This was an excellent performance from our relatively young and inexperienced squad. The standard of golf from all of the teams was exceptional, particularly as the course was playing very long, with lightning fast, undulating greens. Our girls certainly made an impact, and mounted a very strong challenge, which bodes well for the future.

Ladies Interclub Final 2022

Interclub Final 22This year’s final took place at Wollaton Park on Monday 12th September, between Stanton on the Wolds and Ruddington Grange. Conditions were somewhat changeable, with the brollies going up a fair bit, but after a summer of baked dry courses, the lush green fairways were a treat and Wollaton was as scenic as always.
The matches were very tight and both teams played some tremendous golf. However, in the end Ruddington Grange prevailed, winning 3 up. Their team comprised the formidable established pair Wendy Kerry & Loraine Howd, plus Lucy Moorhouse & Josie Connolly playing together for the first time. Gallant runners up from Stanton on the Wolds were Jane Harby & Pam Musson and Fran Tunnicliffe & Helena McCannah. Well played everyone!
Thank you to referee Di Whittaker, to County President Eva Glasby who started the matches and presented the trophy, and of course to Wollaton Park.

Audrey Macmillan
County Captain.
